Getting Involved
One of the pleasures of being part of a small and relatively new parish is that there are always opportunities to get involved! And at Saint Gabriel’s, we take the idea of “the ministry of all believers” very seriously. There are very few ministries that can be done only by ordained persons; for the rest, we welcome your participation.
Some of these are one-time activities and some are longer term commitments. We encourage you to “taste and see” if any of these are something you might like to try. The clergy, vestry members or ushers can point you to the key folks who are involved in these ministries for further guidance.
Here are a few:
Do you sing or play an instrument or like to sing? Consider helping out with the Music Team – no auditions required, just a love for music and a desire to praise God through the hymns and songs we love.
Do you like to cook or bake? Bring a casserole or cake or salad for one of our periodic and delicious potluck events! You might also consider providing some baked goods (store bought or homemade) and coffee for refreshments after church on Sunday. There is a sign-up list on the Information Table for Coffee Hour.
Do you love to work with kids? Consider helping out with KidZone, our Sunday morning school and chapel service for our children. Even if you can only volunteer periodically to be a helper, that’s wonderful. And if you love to work with tweens and teens, we’d love to find more folks who would like to help out with periodic field outings as well as more regular “Sunday School” activities for that age group. Some of our teens also help as teachers and helpers for the little ones – ours is a church family that doesn’t “silo” age groups. We are one church family across the generations in this and in other activities.
Handy with tools? The G-Men (Saint Gabriel’s Men’s Group) often takes on service projects with Habitat for Humanity, Christmas in April, and even fixing up the carts for our “Portable Church.” The G-Men can cook, too, so if you’re a grill maven or a pancake flipper par excellence, this group of guys who demonstrate faith in action might be for you.
As do most Episcopal Churches, we have a group of dedicated volunteers who form the Altar Guild, wonderful young people who serve as acolytes, adults who serve as readers and as Lay Eucharistic Ministers, ushers, trailer pullers (!), and vestry members. We urge you to try out the various ministry opportunities at Saint Gabriel’s, see where your spiritual gifts lie, and grow in Christ through service to the church.
