The History of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrates the appearance of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego, an indigenous man, on December 9, 1531, on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico. According to the tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego and left her image on his cloak as a sign of her love and protection for the people of Mexico and beyond. This miraculous event led to the conversion of millions of indigenous people to Christianity and has become one of the most important religious celebrations in the Catholic Church, especially for the Latinx community.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is known as the Patroness of the Americas, and her feast day is a time for prayer, reflection, and community. At Saint Gabriel’s ~ San Gabriel, we honor this moment in history with a Misa Guadalupana, filled with music, dance, and vibrant tradition, to celebrate our faith and our unity in Christ.
